Issue:
Installing the HP DesignJet 2500CP and 3500CP PostScript (R) driver for Windows 95 or Windows 98.
Solution
The Microsoft (R) Windows Postscript driver, 'readme' file information and troubleshooting tips are included. Refer to the following the driver installation and readme file instructions that follow:
  1. With Windows 95 running on your computer, exit all open applications and then insert the HP DesignJet 2500CP/3500CP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The printer driver setup program will start automatically, and will offer you a choice of languages.
  2. Click the 'Install Driver' button to begin the installation.
Disk installation or installation from driver download
  1. With Windows 95 running on your computer, exit all open applications and click START, RUN, and BROWSE.
  2. Locate the area where the driver was downloaded on your computer. Locate and select 'Setup.exe'.
  3. note:
Do not choose the 'Default PS printer'. This is a generic Windows PostScript driver, and does not contain all of the features of the DesignJet 2500CP or 3500CP.
Below are some questions that you may be asked, depending on your system configuration.
If the printer is connected to your computer by a cable running directly between them, select Local Printer; otherwise select Network Printer.
In this dialog box, select the HP DesignJet 2500CP or HP DesignJet 3500CP.
We recommend that you select Yes. By printing a test page you will test the communications link between your computer and the printer.
At the end of the installation procedure, the printer's property pages are displayed automatically, so that you can choose the printing options best suited to your requirements.
This section offers solutions to problems that you may encounter copying the installation files to your hard disk.
A version of the Setup program files already exists on your system
When the Setup program detects the same, an earlier, or a later version of the Setup files than the version on the CD-ROM, the Existing Files On Local Disk dialog box appears. If an earlier version of the Setup program already exists on your system, overwrite it by clicking Next. If your version of the Setup files is the same or later than the Setup version, keep your version by clicking Skip.
Setup cannot copy the driver files to the specified directory
This problem occurs when you try to copy the Setup program to your disk or when you are copying the driver files to your disk and the destination directory is read only. Consult with your system administrator and have him or her either complete the entire installation for you, change access privileges on that directory, or choose another location for the driver files.
Setup will not allow you to install older versions of the driver files
When one or more of the driver software files on the CD-ROM have earlier dates than the driver files on your local disk, the Attempt To Install An Older Version dialog box lists the driver files with later dates now on your local disk. For more information on a file, select the name of the file and click Details. Installation can be continued, but the files on your local disk with later dates than the CD-ROM files will not be overwritten. If you still wish to install the driver files from the CD-ROM, you must first delete from your local disk any driver files with later dates.
The versions of certain system files need to be updated
The Setup program has checked the version numbers, dates, and sizes of the system files and found that certain files need to be updated. The Different Versions Detected dialog box lists the files to be updated. To obtain more information on a file, select the name of the file and click Details. Click OK when you have finished viewing the differences. Then click Next to copy the newer files to your system.
Printer installation
Certain system characteristics, such as configuration, available memory, and the number of currently open files, may limit the number of printers you can install during any one session. To install more than 50 printers on your system, exit the setup utility after each set of 50 printers.
The default Data Format setting is ASCII data, which enables the file to print on any printer. This is the setting that will be restored if you restore default values. However, you will find that the Data Format is initially set to Tagged Binary, which will give you the best performance with your HP DesignJet printer.
Some PostScript printers support user-definable page sizes, or 'custom pages'. Windows 95 limits the maximum custom-page length to 129 inches. If you specify a value greater than 129 inches, the driver displays an error.
The Page Setup dialog box of some applications replaces the custom-paper names that you specify with their own fixed names for custom paper. The selected custom-paper settings remain valid, and the documents will print correctly.
Some applications, such as Microsoft WordPad, cannot distinguish between printers that are the same model but that you have named differently. As a result, such applications display all custom pages defined for all printers of the same model.
Some applications provide an emboldening feature for PostScript outline fonts (Type 1) that do not have a 'native' bold face, such as Zapf Dingbats. The emboldening process is inexact and may produce slight typographic imperfections. These imperfections may be a concern only for very high-resolution devices, such as imagesetters, or if you require precise typographic fidelity.
Workaround
Select a Type 1 font family that has a native bold face.
Certain characters in some TrueType fonts may not print correctly. This problem is due to imperfections in the fonts themselves.
Workaround
To eliminate TrueType character imperfections, select another font.
Some Printer properties dialog boxes are part of the Windows 95 operating system and are shared with this driver. These property sheets, such as Sharing and Details, may contain spelling or accelerator-key inconsistencies. These problems may be corrected in the next version of the Windows 95 operating system.
Whenever the driver installs a printer, it creates a WPX file in the WINDOWS directory. A WPX file is a condensed description of the printer's features. If you later delete an installed printer, the associated WPX file is not removed. Unused WPX files create no problem on the system other than the disk space they consume. The typical WPX file occupies approximately 12 KB of disk space.
Setting the unprintable area and custom-page sizes in inches or millimeters generates numeric values converted to points (a point is 1/72 of an inch), which the driver uses for internal calculations. In these calculations, the driver rounds off the numeric value you provide to its nearest point equivalent. Because of this, you may observe small discrepancies between the specified numbers and the numbers that appear in the fields after you click OK in the Unprintable Area dialog box.
Support of driver features
Some applications do not support all the features of your printer. Usually the application simply ignores the feature, but in rare cases, a printing error may occur.

Workaround
Do not use these features when printing from the above applications. Newer versions of these applications resolve many of these incompatibilities.
  1. When generating EPS files from Acrobat, always be sure to set the Acrobat copy count to one. Any other value may lead to unexpected results when you embed Acrobat EPS files within other documents.
Workaround
  1. Printing from Acrobat 2.1 with the Send TrueType Fonts As value set to Bitmaps sometimes results in a printing error.
Workaround
Set 'Send TrueType Fonts As' selection to Outlines instead.
  1. Printing text with integrated graphics from the FrameMaker 5.0 application results in a PostScript error.
Workaround
  1. Images on custom page sizes that have width greater than height are clipped.
Workaround
Adobe Illustrator 4.1
  1. If you insert an EPS file generated by printing through Adobe Acrobat 2.0 or 2.1 (Acrobat Exchange or Acrobat Reader) into an Illustrator 4.1 document, and later add text to that document, a printing error may result.
Workaround
None. A future version of Illustrator will correct this problem.
  1. Windows metafiles printed from Adobe PageMaker 5.0 in landscape orientation are cut off on the right side.
Workaround
Adobe PageMaker 6.0
  1. The PPD file for your HP DesignJet does not appear in PageMaker's 'Print Document' dialog box.
Workaround
You should copy the PPD file from the 'WINNTlanguageWINNT40' folder on the HP DesignJet CD-ROM to the 'PM6RSRClanguagePPD4' folder on the disk drive where you have installed PageMaker, and restart PageMaker. You should now be able to select the PPD file for your HP DesignJet 2500CP or 3500CP.
note:
When using the PPD, you are advised to open the Print Options dialog box and ensure that 'Include PostScript error handler' is disabled.
  1. When the 'Send TrueType fonts as:' option is set to Type42, underlined text may print without the underline.
Workaround
Change the 'Send TrueType fonts as:' option to Outlines or Bitmaps.
Persuasion does not retain the n-up layout values selected in the Paper properties dialog box.
Workaround
Reselect the layout setting each time a document is printed.
If you select Binary as the data format selection within Photoshop 3.04, you must set a compatible Data Format value within the driver.
Workaround

Hp Jetadmin Windows 98 Driver

If your printer is connected over a pure binary channel, such as AppleTalk, choose the Pure Binary Data option in the Data Format menu in the Advanced PostScript Options dialog box. If your printer is connected via a serial or parallel connection, select the appropriate binary data format option for your printer, such as Tagged Binary Communications Protocol or the Binary Communications Protocol.
Your HP DesignJet 2500CP or 3500CP seems to receive your print, but never prints it or it is flushed from the printer's buffer memory.
Workaround
If the data format selection made within Photoshop is binary, you must set a compatible data format setting within the driver to prevent a printing error.
Open the driver's Advanced PostScript Options dialog box and:
If your printer is connected over a pure binary channel, such as AppleTalk, choose the 'Pure binary data' option in the Data format menu.
If your printer is connected: via a parallel connection or via a non-AppleTalk network, choose 'Tagged binary communications protocol' in the Data format menu. The 'Pure Binary' communications protocol can cause buffer flushing.
FileMakerPro 2.0 documents with integrated graphics may print out incorrectly.
Workaround
CorelDRAW 4.0 and QuarkXPress
If you insert an EPS file created from QuarkXPress into a CorelDRAW document, a PostScript printing error occurs.

Windows 98 Download

Workaround
CorelDRAW 7.0
CircleD, a Type 1 font supplied with CorelDRAW 7.0, may cause a PostScript printing error.
Workaround
Use the TrueType version of CircleD that is supplied with CorelDRAW 7.0.
When using the driver to perform scaling, your drawing is clipped.
Workaround
Either use the scaling feature of CorelDRAW, or use the driver's 'Scale to page:' feature.
Lotus 1-2-3 cannot always properly calculate the text placement of inverted, rotated text. Text may be missing or incorrectly placed in a printout.
Workaround
Lotus AmiPro 3.1
  1. When you select a block of justified text and apply the double-underline style to it, the document does not print fully underlined.
Workaround
Use single underlined text, not double-underlined, or try double-underlining one line of text at a time.
  1. The Number of Copies setting in AmiPro dialog boxes overrides the Number of Copies option set in the driver.
Workaround
Set the number of copies using the AmiPro dialog boxes.
By default, the size of the image in Freelance will be the same as the page size you have selected. This will result in clipping when you send the image to be printed because the printer will force certain margins around the edges of the page.
Workaround
Freelance's 'Preview' feature will show you if clipping will occur at print time. Shrink the image in Freelance until the Preview feature shows no clipping.
You may have problems printing the Macromedia FreeHand 5.0 sample documents using this driver. FreeHand 5.0 expects the Windows 95 driver name to be PSCRIPT.DRV, instead of ADOBEPS4.DRV.
Workaround
Macromedia FreeHand 7.0
If you check 'Use PPD' in the Print dialog box, none of the HP-specific printer options will work.
Workaround
Micrografx Designer
  1. Printing multiple master fonts from Designer causes PostScript errors.
Workaround
  1. Text in bold and italic styles is printed plain if bold and italic fonts are not installed.
Workaround
Install bold and italic versions of the desired font, if available.
The driver ignores print settings specified within Excel 5.0 when the document is printed.
Workaround
Specify the print settings from the Printers folder only.
PowerPoint 7.0 does not print watermarks in the background.
Workaround
Microsoft Word
  1. If you change driver settings within the Microsoft Word Page Setup dialog box and select an option that conflicts with your current configuration, the driver cannot inform you of the conflict.
Workaround
Change printer settings from the Print dialog box or from the Printers folder.
  1. Microsoft Word cannot print dotted borders in color to PostScript printers.
Workaround
Replace dotted borders with solid borders or dotted black borders.
  1. When you let Word let automatically 'fix' the margins on a custom page size, they do not correspond to the minimum margins for a HP DesignJet 2500CP/3500CP.
Workaround
Manually enter the margins as follows: Top and Bottom = 27mm (1.07in), Left and Right 18mm (0.71in).
The number of copies that you set using the driver is not used at print time.
Workaround
Use the 'Copies' feature of QuarkXPress to set the number of copies.
Printer PostScript level
The driver supports PostScript Level 2 or PostScript 3 devices only; it does not support Level 1 devices. If you have installed a previous version of the AdobePS driver for a Level 1 device, installing this version replaces the previous version and it no longer prints on Level 1 devices.
Workaround
Delete any Level 1 printer icons from your Printers folder and re-install them using Microsoft's Add Printer Wizard.
If you have a fast computer with an ECP port, and you enable bidirectional printing in the Spool Settings of the drivers' Details Properties page, you may experience some loss of data in communicating with your printer. For this reason, bidirectional printing is disabled by default.
Workaround
ICM and ICC profiles
The driver fully supports Windows 95 Image Color Matching (ICM). ICM can enhance the output of color PostScript printers. ICM is enabled only if you have an ICC profile for your printer installed. ICC profiles are provided with this release.
RGB-based ICC profiles do not now support Host Image Color Matching, although they do support all other modes of color matching. Profiles that do not conform to Windows 95 ICM requirements may allow you to select any of the color matching options, but will have no effect on the output.
Certain ICM-enabled applications may override settings you have selected in the driver.
You see the message 'Communication impossible' when you activate the driver's 'Ink Level and Media sensing' feature.
Your HP DesignJet 2500CP or 3500CP is configured as a Novell NDS printer, and this configuration is not supported by the Ink Level and Media sensing feature.
Workaround
Use a Novell Bindery port or JetAdmin TCP/IP port.
You may experience problems while using JetAdmin to configure your printer. For example: you may not be able to see your printer listed; you see a message telling you to specify a valid port to print to; or a message telling you that you do not have enough Admin Access to modify printer configurations.
Workaround
In the case where you do not have Admin Access rights, here's one way to configure your printer in JetAdmin is as follows:
Windows
Select 'Other' in the 'Add Printer' dialog box and then with 'HP JetDirect port' selected, click on OK. Then with the 'TCP/IP' option selected, use the browse feature to select your printer from the list of devices.
note:Hp web jetadmin
The 'IPX/SPX' option is equally valid; however, you may see a message telling you that you do not have enough Admin Access to modify printer configurations.
The printer will effectively ignore requests to nest prints if you use your Novell network software to send a banner message and your JetDirect card is not configured to print it.
Workaround
Open JetAdmin's 'PJL Settings' dialog box and enable 'Banner (Queue Server Mode)'. Or request that your Novell printer administrator disables the 'Print Banner' from the Novell print server.
Switching between PostScript and other printing languages
A printing problem may occur if you have a printer that can switch between printing languages and you have manually downloaded the PostScript header using the Send Header Now button in the PostScript properties dialog box. In this case, the header may be lost and printing may result in a PostScript error.
Workaround
For more information on language-switching capabilities, refer to your printer documentation. You may also wish to retain the default driver settings so that the driver will download the PostScript header with each job.
Certain printers with custom-paper support (roll-fed or cut-sheet) rotate the image 90 degrees if the custom-defined paper size width is greater than the length. This printer feature may cause unexpected printing results, especially if the Transverse feature is selected. For information on custom-paper features specific to your printer, see your printer documentation.
Driver hangs up when you try to select a custom page size
This problem is known to occur in the following situation:
  1. You have installed drivers for both the HP DesignJet 2500CP and the HP DesignJet 3500CP.
  2. The first driver is an HPGL or PostScript driver; the second driver is a PostScript driver and not the same as the first driver (for example, the first driver is for PostScript level 2 and the second for PostScript
  3. You define a custom page size in the first driver, then change to the second driver and click on the Custom button. At this point, the driver hangs up.
Workaround
If you are in this situation, do not change from one driver to the other with a custom page size selected.
If your printer is low in memory, the error handler may not be able to print complete messages if an error condition occurs.
Workaround
Either add more memory to your printer or disable the error handler by turning off the Print PostScript Error Information option in the PostScript properties dialog box.
You should avoid printing EPS files that were generated to contain 'pure binary' data (an option in some applications).
